Resources for Parents
We understand that parents can be key players in helping students explore careers and enter the workforce. We welcome the opportunity for parents to explore how they can support the priorities of the Career Services department. Ways to contribute may include sharing our office's events, services and resources with your student, providing employer referrals who are interested in hiring SDSU students and alumni, and by volunteering to support Career Services activities.
If you know someone who would like to hire SDSU students or alumni, please contact Andrew Soliz.
At SDSU Career Services, we do our best to help all students reach their goals and find their professional path to success. As a parent you can also help by encouraging your student to:
- Set up a Handshake account - All students have Handshake account associated with their SDSUid. Your student can use this platform to access to job and internship postings, career fairs, information sessions, workshops, and notices about upcoming events.
- Participate in High-impact Experiences - Encourage learning inside and outside the classroom by helping your student tie academics to real-life experience. Encourage your student to participate in:
- Internships - Not all majors require an internship experience, but all students can benefit from one. And it's never too early to start!
- Aztec Mentor Program (AMP) - All students are encouraged to find a mentor, who can show and tell what a career is really like — as well as share personal experience and advice. AMP is offered every semester, to connect students with mentors in their chosen career field.
- Community Engagement - Soft skills are developed through working with other people and navigating new situations. Students who engage in their communities as volunteers early on in their education are developing necessary soft skills to be a competitive professional. There is a plethora of experiences waiting in the local community that do not require previous qualifications and offer a wealth of training, transferable skills, and networking opportunities.
- Attend Career Services Workshops and Events - Each semester, Career Services offers career fairs, workshops, and information sessions designed to help students develop professionalism. These programs help students navigate, understand, and connect to a professional network. View our current Workshops and Events Schedule.
- Research Majors and Careers - Whether your student knows exactly what major and career they want to pursue, or is still figuring things out, they will benefit from researching available major and the career options. Encourage your student to:
- Review majors in SDSU's General Catalog.
- Review Career Services' Majors and Careers page.
- Make an appointment with a career counselor to discuss major and career options.
- Take a career assessment.
- Explore external career resources.
Welcome, Parents of SDSU students! There are many ways you can get involved and make a positive difference in the life of your student. We appreciate your support and your commitment to excellence, for your student — and for all Aztecs!
- Join the Aztec Parents Association - You'll find information about SDSU and ways that you can get involved and give back to help improve and create new programs for your student, and all students!
- Become an Aztec Mentor - The Aztec Mentor Program allows you to share your valuable professional experience with SDSU juniors, seniors, and graduate students. You can show and tell what a career is really like — as well as share personal experience and advice. Mentoring may involve resumé reviews, informational interviews, job shadowing, and more, all with just an 8 hour commitment per semester. AMP is offered every semester, to connect students with mentors in their chosen career field.
- Register your company with Career Services - Encourage your company to register for SDSU career fairs, participate in on-campus interviews, and present employer information sessions. Learn more!
